The surprising foods that may be the cause of your bloating
Fruits and veggies? Unfortunately, yes, it could be and it's due to them being a part of a FODMAP food group.
FODMAP, is an acronym for: fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols.
These group of foods may be why your stomach hurts after eating, what you thought, was a healthy snack/meal. Lol, I know what you're thinking ... but let me break it down some more.
FODMAPs are short-chain carbs and sugar alcohol found, naturally, in certain foods or food additives. With that said, some people - especially those with irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) and other digestive sensitivities - have a hard time breaking foods down. Their small intestine poorly absorbs nutrients from certain foods which then causes uncomfortable symptoms. Some of these symptoms include:
- Excess gas
- Instant or lingering abdominal pain
- Bloating
- Diarrhea and/or constipation
Is this sounding familiar? If, after eliminating what you thought were "bad" foods, you're still experiencing discomfort from healthy foods, you may have to really dive into your diet and take note on what may be the culprit. You're probably wondering, how? Well, first, take a look at the list of example high/low FODMAPs and, please, try not to get overwhelmed.
Finished? What are your thoughts? Maybe that'll you'll never enjoy another one of your favorite savory or sweet dishes? It's okay, I thought the same but it's possible not ALL of these foods are making you feel like crap. Just some. You just have to figure it out and then make few adjustments.
First, you want to make sure you're clear of celiac disease, gluten sensitivities or any other digestive-related ailment. After that, try an elimination method and make sure to take great, detailed notes. If you want to research a bit further, Dr. Axe breaks it down beautifully.
